Just please, play the games as they were intended and you will get so much fricken enjoyment out of them. It is like a mouse and keyboard set up, joysticks have always been awful for shooters and I am so glad Nintendo have brought mouse style aiming to consoles. The guy has a lot of difficulty with the controls in the all range area of Corneria and having played this game multiple times (I beat arcade mode on the first try) I can see exactly why. Heretic like many early DOS games did not default to a WASD control scheme and had very limited mouse configuration. in my gog version of heretic the controls differ from original as i remember it.
